If you've been paying attention then this shouldn't come as a shock to you [/rimshot], but tomorrow you'll begin your electrical lessons with the instructor from North Bay.
Please remember to come to class on time, I'm sure the instructor will give you more details about his expectations on the first day, but I imagine at minimum you will need your green tag safety shoes, and it would probably be wise to have your hard hat and safety glasses handy.
Have fun!
And remember, I'll be back for more carpentry on Friday.
Well, I was on record predicting that the rain would pass us by today, but instead it is pouring down as I type.
BUT!
Both Environment Canada and the Weather Network agree that the rain will finish sometime before lunch.
So rather than lose the entire day just when we're making real progress on our Gazebo, let's
delay class until after lunch.
That's right - you can take the morning to read the text book chapters on roof framing (unit 15, pp. 478ff) and then study the gazebo plans for the rafter cutting. Then we'll meet at the shop for 1:00 where we will work in the nice dry great out doors.
See you at 1:00 today!
As usual, feel free to call or text me with any questions.
As we talked about in class, today we were due to begin our gazebo, which means we would be working outside all day.
That also means we can't work if it's raining.
When it comes to rain though, we can't just go for it and hope for the best: I'm conscious of the fact that several of you have to work to arrange rides to and from school, and can't just travel in on a chance and leave early if we get rained out. In other words, I need to make a decision now - before the day starts.
I remember an old boss once said to me that when it comes to decisions like this, any decision he makes would be the wrong one.
Given that, I'm calling a rain day today.
It's raining currently where I live, and the Environment Canada forecast for the day calls for likely rain all day. I might still be willing to chance it, except that after lunch the forecast calls for thunderstorms with lightening, and a gazebo just isn't worth that risk.
So take the day, you can catch up on all the reading I gave you this week, and review your gazebo plans - see if you can find the mistake (hint: it's in the rafters).
Hello Class! To those hearty survivours who are still coming to class, please bring your coping saws tomorrow (Wednesday Oct 14) as we will be perfecting the art of coping trim.
Looking forward to seeing most of you in class tomorrow. And by that I don't mean that I'm not looking forward to seeing some of you, but rather that some of you are not going to be able to join us tomorrow, and while that is unfortunate, that's just how life is sometimes. Definitely looking forward to seeing those of you who can make it though!
Just to give you an updated schedule for the remaining class days:
And some reminders:
Class will run from 9:00 to 5:00 every day, with lunch from
12:00-1:00.
Please remember to come to class prepared with PPE and
Hand-tools, including safety shoes.
Please follow the covid protocols as directed by the
college - see video in previous post.
Once the outdoor construction has begun, we may be subject
to class delays or cancellations due to weather. In such events, a notice will be posted on the class website by
8:00 on the morning of.Remember – it
is your responsibility to check this.
Please inform the instructor if you will be absent from
class, either by call, email or text at the number or address given to you in class.
Any other important notices or updates will be, as usual,
posted on this course website.
So we have a wee delay. Not long, just two weeks. We were going to restart class on Sept 28, but now we are going to restart two weeks later on:
TUESDAY OCTOBER 13
That's right, we will not be in class next week, so do not come next week. If you do come, you will be standing outside alone. Maybe that's what you want. Maybe quarantine is getting to you, in which case, sure, go ahead and come. But you will be alone, the rest of us won't be there, because the rest of us are returning to class on
TUESDAY OCTOBER 13
Why the delay? Most of us just weren't ready to restart next week. I've spoken to almost all of you individually, and the new date was the most gooder for the most people. Sorry for the confusion, of course, but it is more better over all.
As before, please review the covid protocols video still linked below, and come prepared every morning with your mask, etc.
That's right, it's time to get back in the class room and finish up.
We still had a few days left in our level one carpentry curriculum when the shut down happened. Despite all the work you've done, you can't get your level one credit unless you finish those hours. So we're bringing you back into the classroom to do the remaining hours, as well as your electrical and welding components. Once those are done, you will have your level one, and will have completed the first step towards becoming a licensed carpenter.
Now, as for the work placements. Given all the circumstances, we've had mixed success with those this year. Only about half of you are working in placements. As far as the course goes - that's actually not that bad. The work placement is NOT required to get the level one credit. The work placement is required ONLY to get you Canadore Pre-Carpentry Certificate. So if you have not gotten into a placement yet, the worst case scenario is merely that you graduate with your ministry level one credit, but not a Canadore certificate. But you'd still have your level one, which means you're still on your way. Furthermore, if we can get you working and get the placement hours complete in the near future, Canadore is willing to count that retroactively and issue your certificate. So it should be fine either way.
Now, the date of our class resumption is:
SEPTEMBER 28 - OCTOBER 9.
Please confirm with me as soon as possible that you will be able to make it.
Also, the college has protocols in place to manage Covid19, please watch the video below to complete your covid training.
Finally, I need to put out an APB on Megan and Jolene. I don't know if it's just that I smell bad, or what, but I haven't been able to connect with either of them. If you have either of them within your friend circle, please ask them to get in touch with me.
