Class Thursday April 19th

Hello carpenters,

For class tomorrow we will spend almost the entire day working on your trestle bench.   Hopefully you followed the instructions in class and have already picked up your plans and are busy becoming an expert in them.

We will review the plans first thing, then you will break off with your partner and get to work.

We will want to try to do as much of the work outside as possible.  Sawdust from pressure treated wood is nasty, and the ventilation in the shop leaves something to be desired.   The weather forecast for tomorrow is only a high of 1 degree, so you will want to come prepared with your cold weather gear.

Class Cancelled Today Monday April 16th

My Dear, dear carpenters,

Due to the sprightly spring weather we are experiencing, Canadore College is closed today, which would make it very difficult to have class.  Accordingly, there is no pre carpentry class today Monday April 16th.   If you manage to make it to school for class, you will find no one there.  (If that happens, please feel free to give the floor a good sweep and organise the tool cupboard)

Weather permitting, we will resume class tomorrow Tuesday April 17th and we will spend the remainder of the week finishing off our skills (flooring, windows & doors, trim and stairs) and get a start on our trestle bench project.

Stay tuned!

Skills

Hello Carpenters,

Tomorrow (Thur Apr 11) we will spend the morning finishing up your tool totes.  We will skip re-cap and get right into that work, so please come dressed and ready for that.

After lunch at exactly 1PM we will have Dave Martin from Martin Contracting coming to do the lesson on roof framing, and you will all cut yourself a rafter (which, as always, you will be able to take home and present to your mother...).

On Friday you will have your electrical class with Ron.

Looking ahead to next week, we will mop up the last of our skills units - including flooring, trim, and stairs - and then move into your first major project, the trestle benches.

Weather permitting, the bench work will be done mostly outside, so please come dressed prepared.

As always, feel free to text or email me with any questions.

Class In The Days Ahead

Hello Carpenters,

Weather permitting, tomorrow (Thursday April 5) you will have your regular math class with Ron.  This is your last scheduled math class, so I know you will not want to miss it.  On Friday April 6 you will return for your regular electrical class, which will be positively live with amped up excitement, and I would be shocked if any of you were so negative as to miss it!  On Monday April 9th we will be back to carpentry.  First thing in the morning we will have a special guest lecture from Sheena Sharp from Cool Earth architecture.   Sheena is an expert in the latest building trends and the newest developments in energy efficiency, and I know she will be eager to answer your questions about environmental advances and building design in general.  Please make sure you are on time Monday morning, and be prepared with your thoughtful questions.   To help you out - and because I know you are all very concerned about what to do with yourselves this Friday night - I would strongly encourage you to read and review Unit 8 in your text book ("Architectural Plans and Building Codes" pp. 156-217) and Unit 16 ("Energy Efficient Housing" pp. 593-629).

As always, feel free to text me if you have any questions.

Happy Baking!

No Class Today April 4th

Hello Carpenters.

Yesterday I heard from today's scheduled guest lecturer who said "what are the chances that class will be cancelled tomorrow due to the snow storm?" and I confidently replied "ZERO! At Canadore, we don't believe in snow storms."   As we all know, even though I am usually right about almost everything, today is one of those rare occasions where I am only "almost right,"  as class is in fact cancelled due to the snow storm.  We will pick up where we left off next day, stay tuned to this channel.

To be clear: NO CLASS TODAY APRIL 4TH!

Class Today Monday April 2

Hello carpenters,

Just a reminder that there is class today - Monday April 2.  If you want extra long-long weekends, become a banker!

Meanwhile, we will most likely be outside for an exercise this afternoon.  The weather report says it should be up to just above Zero degrees by then, which is still fairly chilly, so make sure you dress accordingly today.

Thanks!

Electrical Class This Week

If you've been paying attention then this shouldn't come as a shock to you [/rimshot], but tomorrow you'll begin your electrica...
